This is about my husband's battle with gout. Thank God for Plexus.
"Almost 18 months ago I was suddenly diagnosed with gout. Gout is a disease where poorly metabolized uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints causing excruciating pain due to intense inflammation. I had always considered myself a very healthy person, so this was a shock to my system. My dad had gout, (there is a familial component to this disease) and I watched him suffer for years, so I knew I was in for a battle.
I sought medical attention and was disheartened when I was instructed by my physician to start on the standard anti-inflammatory medications immediately. I asked my doctor about lifestyle and dietary changes, and he told me they wouldn’t work and to just stick with the medications. Well, that didn’t sit well with me at all. I knew prolonged usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Motrin, Aleve and others were associated with kidney problems. I tried diet control and also homeopathic treatments, but my symptoms got worse. In fact, the inflammatory joint changes moved into my right index finger making it hard to perform surgery. I couldn’t ride my bicycle for exercise due to the pain. I was miserable.
